You don’t have to have the high spirits of Emma Woodhouse, or the smouldering intensity of Mr Darcy to enjoy Sandgate’s very own night of Regency-era glamour.
The Jane Austen Ball, organised by Early Australian Colonial Dance, is now in its third year and is fast becoming a fixture on the social calendar of the 4017 community.
Dance caller, Heather Clarke, said the event was simply a great night out.
“For me, it’s about the dancing,” she said.
“We have classes in Samford and people are welcome to come and learn, although we do teach the dances on the night as well, so there will be plenty of help there.
“These dances were pre-industrial revolution and it was a time when people still danced in groups.
“Now, we’re used to having a partner and you just dance with that one partner, but at this time, people danced in groups and it was very social.
“It was an elegant time, I think people feel it was a very romantic time.”
Dressing up in Regency-era costume is another (optional) drawcard for the event.Tickets are $50 and include entry, dancing, entertainment and a regency supper. Tickets via Facebook or www.eventbrite.com.au A Jane Austen Ball Saturday 19 October, 7pm Sandgate Town Hall
