Music By The Sea

Enjoy an intimate evening with the fabulous Katie Noonan. The first Western woman to sing in China’s Forbidden City, Queensland’s own award-winning songbird will bring her eclectic jazz, pop and classical style to Sandgate.

Saturday 1 February - 7.30pm start
Sandgate Town Hall

Nothing is planned or discussed. So, when members of The Necks walk on-stage they simply start playing jazz, in the time honored tradition.

As a result, the ever-evolving improvisation that emerges, as masterly fingers explore grand piano or organ, upright bass and drums, has rewarded the trio with global cult band status.

Their popularity was celebrated on their home turf last year, with a gong at the Art Music Awards. Chris Abrahams (piano), Lloyd Swanton (bass), and Tony Buck (drums) took out the Richard Gill Award for Distinguished Service to Australian Music, and were the first band to do so.

Naturally, there’s some curiosity around the effect their music has on people. One example is an article published in the New Your Times by Geoff Dyer. The headline reads - My Obsession with the Necks, the Greatest Trio on Earth. Written as an art piece that could be described as music played with words, he explores what he describes as nearly 30 years of genre-bending, improvisational work. As a crescendo to the piece, Dyer says that over the last dozen years, the Australian trio have obsessed him to the point of mania.

Now, in 2020 – and after 20 albums, top industry awards, and sell-out concerts around the world – they’re coming back to Sandgate. We hope you’ll enjoy their unique sound!
