Want to get your heart rate up while enjoying the beautiful Sandgate foreshore, but don’t like running? Nordic Walking and Urban Poling South East Queensland has the answer. The group, which sets a cracking pace walking with specialised poles at Sandgate each week, is now offering a six week course for beginners or those with rusty technique.

Master trainer and group member Juliette Fritschi said nordic walking uses up more energy than regular walking, and that beginners may need some time to improve their fitness before joining the group’s regular walks.

“Research shows you increase your cardiovascular workout by an average of 20 percent over and above what you would do with normal walking,” she said.

“It’s not a hard technique once you learn it, but it does take a couple of sessions to get it right and to make sure you are maximising your benefits.”

Class attendees can also get a taste of the social side of this all-ages activity. Members of the Saturday morning group have coffee together after their walk at 7am, and all attendees are welcome to join.
