A Jolly
SANDBAG needs you.

Christmas is a time for giving, so why not give your time and talents to help the less fortunate of our community.

SANDBAG Community Centre is seeking volunteers for their Christmas Day lunch, which this year will be held at St Patrick's College Callan Centre. The event has been operating regularly for over ten years now and SANDBAG expects around 170 people to attend.

SANDBAG's neighbourhoods and communities program coordinator Erin Williams said, It's not just those who are experiencing homelessness or financial crisis who will be attending. There are many people in our local community who are still isolated from their families for the first time this year.

Children are very welcome, it's very much a family event. Santa will be paying a visit and everyone leaves with a present. It's what Christmas day is all about; giving and sharing and joining with others.

This year that seems even more important than ever after our experiences of social isolation, Erin said.

We need a significant number of volunteers for the Christmas Day lunch, a couple of days beforehand and on Boxing day as well. We are usually inundated with willing helpers, which is a great reflection of our very kind and caring community.

Volunteers can choose any or all parts of the Christmas event. Anyone who is interested in volunteering is encouraged to contact SANDBAG and leave their details. There are two information nights in mid-November.

Aside from the usual responsibilities, volunteers will be briefed on COVID-safe practices. Without the facility that has been generously provided by St Patrick's College, the whole event was at risk of not proceeding this year because of social distancing requirements.

SANDBAG will also gratefully receive donations of presents for children, teens and adults or family hampers. Donations can be dropped off on weekdays between 9am and 5pm at 153 Rainbow Street, Sandgate or at the offices of Councillor Jared Cassidy or State Member Stirling Hinchliffe.
