Celebrating the local LGBTQI+ community and 30 years of Brisbane Pride will be the focus of a special event this month. Art and Music By the Ocean, hosted by Brisbane artist and art therapist Mikarla Teague, aims to celebrate diversity and create a lasting piece of art.
“Coming out of COVID, we’ve all been dealing with loneliness and isolation, and of course this includes the LGBTQI+ community as well,” Mikarla said.
“So, as we start to open up again, we wanted to be at the forefront of reconnecting and re-centering with our community.”
Event attendees will help create a huge banner, which will be a feature of the 2020 Brisbane Pride Fair Day to be held at the end of November.
“Art and Music by the Ocean is about celebrating diversity and the strength that the LGBTQI+ community is famous for – 2020 has just been such an unnatural year,” Mikarla said.
“There will be live music and we’ll be creating a seven-metre-long banner to celebrate the diversity of our community and to celebrate 30 years of Pride in Brisbane. We would just really like everyone in the community to come along and be a part of it.
“It’s part of the larger Brisbane Pride Festival, and we hope it’s going to be a fun and relaxing day.”
Mikarla said the LGBTQI+ community had seen a great deal of progress in the past 30 years.
“We have seen a lot of positive change in 30 years, although in many ways we still have a long way to go,” she said.
“I do feel though that the LGBTQI+ community is out there more; we’re celebrating our place in the community and celebrating just standing in our power and in our pride of who we are.
“We invite all our allies, family members, and friends to come along to this amazing event and stand tall with us. Everyone is welcome.”
