Local singer songwriter Grace Spinks is set for a busy month. She’s releasing her new EP Shelter in the Rain and debuting her new performing name, Mackenzie Grace.
“I think Mackenzie Grace, which is my middle and first name, captures my musical style and vibe more,” she said.
Grace’s musical journey began at a young age, and she describes her family as “super musical”. “We’ve always played music around the campfire and there’s always been a lot of music in my home, so it was pretty natural for me to start writing music when I was little,” she said. “I’ve been doing little performances since grade six, performing at the Einbunpin Festival and busking around Sandgate, and now I play at markets on my weekends and perform at Brisbane festivals and functions.
If you haven’t yet heard Grace play live, you can listen to her songs on Spotify and other music streaming services. She said her style falls somewhere between acoustic indie-pop and folk. “I grew up listening to Taylor Swift and still love her now,” she said. ”Throughout high school my biggest musical influences have been Dodie Clark and Rex Orange County, two amazing indie musicians.”
Grace has her sights set on a long musical career, with plans to study music next year and become a performing musician. “My biggest passion in music is composing and beyond anything, I hope my music connects with people,” she said. “The best part of performing my music is hearing what people hear in it that maybe I don’t, and how they interpret my writing. I can see myself writing for my own shows, other musicians or maybe even for theatre.”
For now, her EP launch will feature some other young local talent including Josh Crawford, Nivrithi Bhaskar, and Ella Jones.
“I will be playing my full EP set with a band – my first ever headlining performance of all original music. The bar will be open and there will be barbecue food for sale throughout the night provided by the Sandgate Bowls Club, and it’s set to be a super fun night.”
