Christmas is upon us and this year there’s an extra-special reason to celebrate, because Carols by the Bay is back.
Students from Brighton State School, Sandgate State School and Nashville State School will join Multitude Choir and Bayside Divas to sing all your favourite Christmas songs at Einbunpin Lagoon on Thursday, 2 December.
Deagon Ward Councillor Jared Cassidy will co-host the event with Federal MP for Lilley, Anika Wells and State Member for Sandgate, Stirling Hinchcliffe. He said Carols by the Bay was one of his favourite events.
“It brings the whole community together to kick off the festive season in Sandgate,” Jared said. “I think this year will be extra special because our lives have been interrupted and put on hold so many times over the past couple of years. Celebrating Christmas as a community is a great testament to our community’s resilience over this period.”
Bring along a picnic rug or chairs and dress in your Christmas best to enjoy the festivities. There will be a barbecue, drinks, coffee, snow cones and ice cream available to purchase. Bramble Bay Lions will be selling Lions Christmas cakes and puddings and Bracken Ridge Lions have a surprise in store involving a certain jolly figure in a red suit.
“Each school is busy practising the carols and preparing for the night,” Jared said. “Bringing together three different school choirs is no mean feat, but each year they sing in perfect harmony.”
Meredith Kelly, who is coordinating the schools and will be conducting the choirs on the night, said each Christmas the local schools joined together as one.
“Junior and senior choirs from the schools rehearse separately, a program of both modern and traditional carols, and then come together to celebrate the joy of Christmas,” Meredith said.
“It is a colourful, fun-filled evening that all children, from prep to year six, enjoy. Whether they are up on the stage, or with their family on a picnic rug, the children look forward to this event.”
The choirs will perform classics like Away in a Manger, Silent Night, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
“A personal favourite of mine is Feliz Navidad,” Jared said. “A crowd favourite is We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Most people can sing along to that one without the song book.”
