Villages Of Brisbane: What Is Brisbane Open House?
If you’ve ever wanted to have a sneak peek into some of Shorncliffe’s most iconic buildings or learn about the history behind some of Sandgate’s most stunning architecture, then Villages of Brisbane is an event you won’t want to miss.

Presented by Brisbane Open House, Villages of Brisbane is offering an exciting opportunity for the public to immerse themselves in the hidden wealth of architecture that is found in some of our community’s most beloved buildings.

Taking place on August 21, the event encourages people to explore their neighbourhood and to look at iconic buildings through a fresh pair of eyes.

Starting in 2010, Brisbane Open House has continued to flourish with thousands of people taking part in the event every year. 2019 marked the ten-year anniversary of Brisbane Open House and more than 35,000 visitors took part in the event, engaging in 120 sites across Brisbane.

While Brisbane Open House is an established and very successful event, Sandgate and Shorncliffe are lucky enough to be featured in the first ever ‘Villages of Brisbane’ program.

Executive Director of Brisbane Open House, Melissa Hoedel, said Sandgate and Shorncliffe are the perfect starting point.

“Sandgate and Shorncliffe will introduce the inaugural Villages of Brisbane to the Brisbane Open House program,” Melissa said.

“They have such a wealth of history and incredible architecture, that the Villages of Brisbane is the ideal platform to showcase its beauty to locals and visitors alike.”

Villages of Brisbane will see participants explore the streets of Sandgate and Shorncliffe. Not only will people be able to gain historical insight into some of the area’s oldest buildings, but they will also be able to travel around on a heritage bus provided by The Queensland Omnibus & Coach Society.

“We aim to have approximately 15 venues and 5 curated walking tours,” Melissa said. “We will be encouraging the use of public transport, in particular the rail. We will also be partnering with Omnibus, who will be providing free transport to attendees in a regular loop service on the day.”
