Awareness is the greatest agent of change. — Eckhardt Tolle.
Luckily, organisations like Lions Club Brisbane Bramble Bay (LCBBB) are dedicated to increasing Diabetes awareness, prevention and research.
“Our Lap the Map fundraiser is a family-friendly walk encouraging young and old to get outdoors and walk in support of healthy lifestyles while raising awareness of Diabetes,” said David Whiffin, Vice President of LCBBB. “It’s a great way to get involved in the community.”
LCBBB is proactive in teaching young people, especially, the importance of taking care of themselves.
“We have trained nurses visit high schools to share the values of good diet, exercise and knowing their blood sugar,” said David. “We also organise healthy breakfasts through the school’s chaplaincy program.”
Everyone starts Lions Lap the Map at Sandgate Aquatic Centre foreshore and walk to the end of Shorncliffe Pier and back again — about a 5km walk.
Leading up to World Diabetes Day (14 November), Lions Clubs are aiming to surpass Australia’s circumference of 25,760kms. Nationwide they’ve achieved 15,856kms and counting.
To join in, put on your walking shoes, bring your water, along with your Gold Coin donation. The people are great as are the views and you never know, you might make new friends along the way.
