Music By The Sea
After 26 years and over 600 performances, Music By The Sea takes a bow on 2 December when the curtains finally close on Queensland’s iconic concert series.

You are invited to join Director Zoli Mauritz in savouring the final performance with Shanasheel, a unique ensemble with classical and folk repertoire from Egypt, Syria and other regions of the Middle East. Transcending borders and cultures, this ART form is known to leave audiences enchanted and inspired and offers an uplifting metaphor for life after MBTS.

Of his decision to tie a slipknot in the rich carpet he has woven from multiple genres of music, Zoli says, “I feel it’s time to retire. I started the journey establishing MBTS in 1997, presenting concerts in the Sandgate Town Hall, the Monthly Concert Series and 16 years of the Music By The Sea Festival.

“We never went for razzamatazz or visuals. It really has been all about the music. We have hosted an incredible line-up of local, national and international artists playing a diverse array of music.”

Elena Kats-Chernin AO adds, “The special highlight for me was Zoli commissioning The Sandgate Sonata from me, premiered by Tamara-Anna Cislowska. The premiere of this piece in this iconic festival will always stand out in my mind as one of the most special events in my composing career.”

Linsey Pollak OAM, also sings praise, “What an achievement. Congratulations Zoli on having the vision, instigating and fuelling and organising this wonderful music project. It has filled many people’s ears and hearts with wonderful diverse and inspiring music and you should feel great satisfaction in having created and sustained such a fantastic community project. Thank you also for giving me the opportunity to share many different musical projects as part of Music By The Sea, it has been an honour to do so.”

And now, in a fond farewell, Zoli says, “I thank you all, you, the loyal audience; some coming to our concerts since last century! You filled the hall with your applause and appreciation for music that moved and inspired you.”
