Art Exhibition Showcases Student’s Creative Palette
Local primary school students are brushing up on nature with an art exhibition that showcases the theme of Sacred Earth.

The Sacred heART Collective is an inaugural fundraising art show for Sacred Heart Primary School, set to open with a special cocktail evening on Friday, 7 June.

Parent and exhibition organiser, Melissa Delacour said the idea for the Sacred heART Collective came about after the school’s 130th anniversary last year.

“I organised for all the students to do a self-portrait and it was printed on a tea towel that our school community could purchase,” Melissa said. “The amazing self-portraits the students delivered gave me the idea of an art show fundraiser.”

The exhibition will also feature artworks for sale by local artists and high school students.

Sacred Heart Primary School art teacher Angela Hennessy said the school was blessed to have easy access to the many beautiful features of the local area, which inspired the theme of Sacred Earth.

“We incorporate these into the students’ learning whenever possible, with units focused on the foreshore, lagoon and the local wildlife,” Angela said. “We thought that continuing to explore these concepts in the art show would help the students to deepen their connection and concern for the environment around them.”

School staff have also been invited to contribute a piece to the exhibition, to be sold through a silent auction.

“The pieces will be anonymous but many of the students will be able to guess the identity of the artist, as the submissions really show the staff members’ personalities,” Angela said. “There is a little bit of competition to see who can get the highest prices for their submission.”

The funds raised from the event will go towards upgrading the school playground.

“It is an all-abilities playground that seeks to encourage creative and active play for all students with an emphasis on cooperative play and music play,” she said. “In addition, we hope to replace our old basketball hoops that have rusted in the salt air.”

Tickets to the opening night on 7 June are $20pp, which includes a drink on arrival and entry into the lucky door prize. Tickets are available through the school office or at the door.

Entry to the exhibition on 8 June is a gold coin donation. For more information follow Sacred Heart Collective on Facebook.
