Garden Art in Bloom
Step into a Bridgerton-esque world of gardens and flowers at a new art exhibition in Sandgate. Garden Party is the first exhibition by local artist Coralie Bolton, and she said she was “really excited” about showing her work for the first time.

“I worked at St Patrick’s College for a long time in the inclusion department, so I’ve been a teacher and all sorts of things, but I always wanted to do something creative,” Coralie said.

“I’ve turned my garage into a studio, and I’ve learnt to be a yoga teacher as well – I just feel life is for doing what you need to be doing!”

Coralie’s sisters, Lorri Hollis, and Ros Birchenal will also have some pieces in the exhibition.

“I have two creative sisters and I’ve brought them on board to support me, it’s a big space to fill when you have to do 20-plus pieces,” Coralie said.

“The theme is Garden Party, so it’s everything you would see in your back garden – flowers, birds, bees, you name it!

“One of my sisters does some taxidermy, so there will be some domes, and my other sister does really soulful birds, so there’s something there from all three of us.

“We had a fairly nomadic childhood, so this exhibit is all about finding that space to be in your own back garden and finding your place. It’s a soothing kind of place.”

Garden Party will feature both acrylic and oil paintings, as well as ceramics and taxidermy. All the pieces are for sale.

There will also be two workshops run as part of the exhibition, a restorative yoga workshop, and a weaving workshop.

“I’d really like to be an advocate for the Sandgate area to be somewhere people come for art,” Coralie said.

“I’m part of the Creative Trails later this year, and my studio will be open to the public then, as well as having workshops, and I’m so excited about that.”

The Garden Party exhibition runs from Thursday, 6 June to Monday, 24 June at Et Al Gallery on Fifth Avenue, Sandgate.

The official opening night on Saturday, 8 June is a ticketed event but is free to attend. The yoga workshop will be held on Sunday, June 16 and the weaving workshop will be held on Saturday, 22 June.
