Sustainable Style Choices At Sandgate Library Workshop
Keen to learn more about slow fashion? This is your chance to upcycle, mend, embellish and adapt your clothes with the help of sustainability consultant Jane Milburn OAM.

This month, Jane will be hosting a workshop at Sandgate Library where she will teach participants how to give their clothes a new lease on life with five simple hand-stitching techniques.

According to Jane, the rise of fast fashion consumption has led many people to buy more clothes than they need, resulting in a lack of appreciation for the resources, time and skill that go into making clothes.

“Many have forgotten how to mend and repair clothes, or perhaps never learned,” she said. “This means when small problems arise with our clothes, perhaps a button falls off or a seam unravels, they often discard and replace clothes rather than mend them.

“At our workshops, we talk about the ethics and culture around what we wear and suggest simple ways to extend the useful life of our clothes.”

Jane said the workshop would encourage participants to think differently about their clothes and see the potential in unused items sitting in the back of their wardrobes.

“They are inspired to play and experiment with restyling and tinkering to make their clothes work better for them,” she said.

“It is amazing how transformative decorative running stitch using embroidery thread or crochet cotton can be for any plain garment. It is so easy to cover stains by stitching decorative circles or adding a creative patch using visible mending techniques.”

Participants are asked to bring one or two items they would like to upcycle, embellish or mend to the workshop.
