“Bucket residence, lady of the house speaking.”
If you read that opening line and pronounced ‘Bucket’ as ‘Bouquet’, Sandgate Theatre Inc’s new production might just be for you.
Keeping Up Appearances, written by Roy Clarke (performed with the permission of The Agency, Holland Park, London), tells the story of Hyacinth Bucket, the busybody housewife everyone loves to hate.
Sandgate Theatre Inc president Wendy Thomas said the production featured a play within a play.
“Hyacinth drops into the local hall to put her artwork into an exhibition, where she finds Emmett directing the annual theatre production,” she said.
“Of course, Hyacinth talks her way into the cast and changes the play so it’s fit for someone of her standing.
“It’s a comedy and it’s very funny. Hyacinth is played by Michelle Whitmore and she is pretty much on stage for the whole show; she’s amazing.”
Due to COVID restrictions, the theatre company had been forced to leave the Sandgate Town Hall, but Wendy said they had found a new home at a surprising venue.
“We got a call from the Sandgate Hawks, saying they had taken out their gaming machines and would we like to use that space for performances,” Wendy said.
“We’ve built a stage, we have a fully functioning theatre there and really, we’d like to say a big thank you to the Hawks. This is two community organisations from completely different worlds pulling together in these times.”
The club will be open from 6pm before the performance, so theatregoers can enjoy a drink and a light meal before the show.
There are limited seats available for each performance, and the theatre company has a COVID-safe plan in place.
“We’re asking people to book ahead of time and book online, if possible, to help with contact tracing,” Wendy said.Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for concession and can be booked at www.trybooking.com and searching ‘Keeping Up Appearances’ or by calling 0492 916 005.Keeping Up Appearances Friday and Saturday, 13 – 14 November, 7.30pmSunday, 15 November, 2pmFriday and Saturday, 20 – 21 November, 7.30pmSunday, 22 November, 2pmHawks Sporting Club80/120 Lemke Road, Taigum.
