The Sandgate community will take steps to unite against domestic and family violence for Domestic Violence Prevention Month.
The Sandgate and Bracken Ridge Action Group (SANDBAG) is inviting local businesses, organisations, and the community to attend the annual Peaceful Walk and Candle Lighting Ceremony this month.
Event organiser and counselling services manager Kylie Hennan said SANDBAG would like a big crowd to attend this year, particularly as the walk was not able to go ahead last year due to COVID-19.
“We would like as many community members as possible to attend and show their support for people impacted by domestic violence, and also to become educated and realise we all have a role to play,” Kylie said. “We all need to take part in changing gender inequalities and biases that disadvantage women and promote attitudes of violence.
“There are community members who attend every year and this event holds a special place in their heart. We would also love to see some new faces be part of the event this year.”
The walk commences at 4pm at Einbunpin Lagoon and will continue along local streets before arriving at the Sandgate Courthouse at 5pm.
A candle lighting ceremony will follow with a minute of silence to acknowledge the lives lost to domestic and family violence. A series of speakers will appear on the steps of the courthouse including Anika Wells MP, Stirling Hinchliffe MP, and Councillor Jared Cassidy.
A representative from the Queensland Police Service will launch the 2021 Brisbane Northside Safety Card, a wallet-sized card with a list of important phone numbers that can be given to people who might need domestic violence support.
Kylie said Ashton Wood from the charity DV Safe Phone will also speak at the event. “SANDBAG had recently partnered with DV Safe Phone to collect used phones and distribute the phones, once they’ve been checked and tested, to women who are experiencing or escaping domestic violence, and to the Brisbane North and Moreton Bay Region services that support these women,” Kylie said.
SANDBAG has been organising domestic violence prevention walks and events for over two decades.
