The wait is over for art lovers, with the Expressions exhibition making a comeback.

The Shorncliffe Pottery Club’s exhibition returns for its 14th year after taking a break in 2020 due to COVID-19.

Pottery club member Jenny Kingdom said they were excited to be heading back to their roots in Shorncliffe.

“Our exhibition is being hosted by St Patrick’s College in their Callan Centre on Pier Avenue, which is like coming home for us,” Jenny said.

“The Callan Centre is built on the site where our club had its first studio in an old shop,

and where it held its first official meeting all those years ago in 1983.”

Potters, painters, sculpture artists, photographers and creative minds from the pottery club, Sandgate Art Society and local community will present their work for judging at the popular three-day exhibition. All pieces will be available for purchase, including a table of items for under $50.

Jenny said she would be displaying her hand-built clay flying foxes.

“All my profits from sales will go to my charity of choice, Bat Conservation and Rescue Queensland,” Jenny said. “To increase awareness and education of these beautiful animals is what inspires my work.”

Clare Houston will be selling small bowls and mugs, as well as entering larger pieces to be judged.

“The pots that I create have a strong functional approach,” Clare said. “I want things to be useful as well as decorative.”

“I will enter a large hand-built Ikebana vase that has pale blue glazes that form a cascade effect down the sides. I have also made a large vase form with one handle that is wheel thrown and glazed with a classic Celadon glaze.”

Clare said her favourite thing about Expressions was that it was open to everyone.

“I also like that it is a way to bring artists from different fields together, and to celebrate our strong connections and community ties,” she said.

The awards will be presented at the opening night of the exhibition on Friday, 22 October with Councillor Jared Cassidy and the Hon Stirling Hinchliffe MP in attendance.

Shorncliffe Pottery Club is also part of the inaugural 4017 Bayside Open Studios event, with its opening weekend linked to the Expressions exhibition.
