Rock Under The Clock

Rock under the Clock

Sat 28 May
Time : 6:30pm - 11pm
Where : Sandgate Bowls Club
On Saturday 28th May we retrace in song and dance the shaky beginnings of Rock & Roll, from the late 50’s and into the 60’s. Those early days weren’t without a struggle, with some of its legends being drafted, another turning to the gospel and one being ‘put away’ for a minor transgression.

But perhaps the most overwhelming loss to pop music then was on the 3rd February 1959 when three of its brightest stars, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper tragically lost their lives in a light plane crash while on tour, their deaths immortalised by Don McLean in his song ‘Bye Bye Miss American Pie’. Contrary to the song’s prophecy - “the day the music died” -  many contend the underlying message is in reality about the birth of Rock & Roll.

The cryptic lyrics of McLean’s composition brilliantly portray the evolution of an enduring phenomenon in music, and so becomes a fitting anthem for our night of song and dance.
