Grow Your Own Kitchen Garden
Avoid the hassle of the weekly grocery shop by growing all the vegetables and fruit you need in your own backyard.

Learn how to grow abundant food when Morag Gamble from Our Permaculture Life presents 10 Essential Plants for Your Backyard Food Garden at Sandgate Library this month.

Morag will share her top tips for creating edible abundance at the free workshop.

Through a discussion of my 10 favourite permaculture plants, I will unpack a world of edible gardening that makes it easy to grow and enjoy an abundance of home grown food, from how to improve soil, how to create happy plant communities, exploring what thrives in the warm months in the subtropics, and how to make the most of each plant,ť she said.

Morag is a Global Permaculture Ambassador who has led programs in 22 countries over the past 25 years. She is the founder of the Permaculture Education Institute and runs the popular YouTube channel and blog, Our Permaculture Life. She lives an off-the-grid lifestyle with her family in an award-winning permaculture education garden near Maleny.

Permaculture is about designing beautiful, edible landscapes that produce an abundance of food, recycle waste, draw down carbon and restore ecological systems,ť she said.

Permaculture gardens work with nature. Permaculture is also about education for a one-planet way of life.ť

Morag said her interest in growing her own food began at a young age.

My grandfather always grew tomatoes and beans in his tiny backyard,ť she said. I have childhood memories of how proud he was to send us all home after every visit with a bag of fresh produce. It gave him such pleasure, and they tasted so good.ť

Workshop attendees will also discover how growing their own food can reduce their ecological impact.

Growing food is such a beautifully rewarding and calming thing to do,ť she said. I love being able to walk out into my garden and harvest fresh, healthy food for myself and my family. I think growing local food is also a great way to contribute positively to the wellbeing of people and the planet.ť
