Aldi Development Application Fully Approved
Councillor for Deagon Ward, Victoria Newton said she was excited to see plans for a new Aldi store approved by Council this week.

"Local residents and retailers have been waiting anxiously to see the outcome of this application," Cr Newton said.

"There's a lot of support for Aldi to come to Sandgate and hopefully reinvigorate the Brighton Road stretch of shops with their alternative retail choice.

"Ever since Woolworth's made the move across the road, both retailers and residents have been concerned about the large vacancy in the heart of the Sandgate shopping village.

"This approval for Aldi is a real shot in the arm.

"Sandgate shopping village is experiencing a resurgence, with new businesses opening up and others changing hands.

"The addition of Aldi will add to this when their new store opens.

"I'm feeling very positive about business in Sandgate, and I encourage people who haven't been down to Sandgate for a while to come along and check the area out."

After plans were lodged with Council late last year, Aldi's proposal to demolish the old Woolworth's building in Brighton Road Sandgate and to build a completely new store.

Very few submissions were received by Council during the formal objection phase, and even those submissions were in general support and simply sought some minor adjustments to the plan.

Aldi's design will see two new shopfront opportunities on the Brighton Road frontage, with the Aldi store sitting behind above the car park.

"Now we're looking forward to seeing Aldi announce their construction timeframes," Cr Newton added.

"I think we all appreciate there may be some disruptions during construction, but having a vibrant new retailer open up where there's been a large vacancy will be worth it in the long run.

"I'll be working hard keeping a close eye to ensure disruptions are kept to a minimum."
