Be transfixed by the unfolding drama as Sandgate Theatre brings you 12 Angry Jurors – a play that contemplates the huge responsibility of 12 ordinary people as they work through a life-or-death decision.

Set in the ‘round’, the audience is up close and personal as they witness the intense deliberations of a jury determining the fate of a teenager accused of murdering his abusive father. Catherine Radbourne’s direction notches up the tension as viewers observe the characters wrestling with their personal biases and beliefs.

Catherine Radbourne, the Director, said she decided to do this play after receiving her first jury service notice in 2023.

“The thought of being on a jury was both exciting and terrifying, knowing that you could potentially be deciding on the course someone’s life takes,” Catherine said.

“While I didn’t actually get to serve on a jury last year, I thought doing this play was perhaps as close as I could get.”

Reginald Rose’s 12 Angry Men was first written as a teleplay of courtroom drama set in New York in the 1950s yet the themes of looking at how our different experiences, history and prejudices influence our decision-making are as relevant as ever.

Tracey Skinner, playing the role of Foreperson, has years of theatre experience but said this will be her first production with Sandgate Theatre.

“I’m looking forward to cracking the whip in the Jury Room,” Tracey said.

A diverse cast of seasoned local actors – Sandy Adsett, Nicky Whichelow, Jeremy Wellwood, Emily Egan, Greg Jones, Meg Kiddle, David Scheiwe, Caren Heath, Crystal, and Ramesh Maheswaran – play the rest of the jurors.

The play highlights the jurors’ character traits, and as in many situations, all is not as it seems. We witness bravery to stand against a group, unveiled racism and toxic relationships.

The battle between reason and bias plays out between two jurors in particular and reaches a climactic finale with a surprising resolution.
